As a previous Deputy President of Sister Cities NZ, and Mayor of the Selwyn District, I have had a long assocociation with the Sister Cities movement. I am passionate about the opportunities it presents and having formed two Sister City connections, I have a clear understanding of the contribution that Sister Cities NZ can make to our communities and to NZ as a whole. I have been involved with Sister City networks in Japan, China and the USA, and look forward to promoting Sister Cities NZ both in New Zealand and abroad.

I am a Marlborough District Councillor and Chairperson of the Marlborough Sister City committee. Through Sister Cities and people to people exchange, an understanding of different cultures and the way of life of others can be appreciated better than by learning through books. As a result of these friendships we can build a better world and a happier community.

My involvement with Sister City activities started in 1983 and since then I have participated in and hosted many delegation and goodwill visits.
Dunedin has four sister cities - in Japan (Otaru), China (Shanghai), Scotland (Edinburgh) and USA (Portsmouth).
I served as President of the Dunedin -Otaru Sister City Society for 20 years from its inception in 1986, and continue to serve on the Dunedin-Otaru Sister City Committee as well as the Executive Committee of both the Dunedin-Shanghai Association and Dunedin-Edinburgh Sister City Society.
I have enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) being involved in many varied exchanges with our sister cities - cultural, education, sports, youth and trade. |

In October 2004 I was elected as Wellingtons youngest City Councillor, and was successfully re-elected in 2007.
I am the Wellington City Council representative on the Hutt Minoh Friendship Trust (2004 - to present), and visited Wellingtons Sister City Sakai and Hutt Cities Sister City Minoh in October 2009. This experience provided me with a greater understanding of the importance of Sister City links. Being a young and experienced politician provided a point of interest and discussion about the differing cultures between New Zealand and Japan. I believe that it is important that there is a strong focus on encouraging and educating young people about the economic, social and educational opportunities that can occur as a result of strong relationships with Sister Cities.
